Breakfast Brief - Stormy Great Lakes, cool West

Breakfast Brief
Stormy Great Lakes, cool West

A front will bring showers and storms to the Great Lakes, while low pressure will send rain and wind into New England. Summer-like heat will stick around for the central U.S.

The transition from summer to fall often brings contrasting weather patterns to the U.S. Today will be a great example of this phenomenon. The WeatherRadar shows a front bringing showers and storms to the Great Lakes, a low off of Cape Cod pelting the New England coast with rain and wind and a burgeoning West Coast system that will bring more cool air and soggy weather.

This day in weather history

On this day in 1967- Hurricane Beulah moved into South Texas, and torrential rains from the hurricane turned the rich agricultural areas of South Texas into a large lake. Hurricane Beulah also spawned 115 tornadoes.

While isolated storms with gusty winds and hail are possible this afternoon across parts of Illinois, Indiana and lower Michigan, the overall threat of severe weather is low. The low off the coast of Cape Cod also bears watching. Coastal waters will be choppy due to gusty winds. Keep an eye out for marine advisories and check the WindRadar.

The TemperatureRadar still shows cooler-than-average temperatures for the West and summer-like heat for the central part of the country. The Northeast will see highs in the 70s and 80s, while 80s and 90s are in play across much of the South, Plains and Midwest.

Tropical update:

There are three areas of interest we are watching today. The remnants of Gordon have a low chance of redeveloping later this week in the central Atlantic. A nearby wave in the central Atlantic also has a low chance of tropical development over the next seven days. What we are paying the closest attention to is the Caribbean where a tropical depression could form by next week.

The news we're covering today:

  • Summer-like temperatures for the central U.S.
  • Storms for the Great Lakes
  • Coastal low off of New England
