Breakfast brief: Winter storm for Rockies

Breakfast brief
Winter storm for Rockies

Winter is locked in place across the Rockies, with more rounds of snow sweeping through today. It is going to be much quieter on the week's final work day. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

The last of a series of atmospheric river events to hit northern California and the Northwest will finally sweep into the Mountain West. Bringing heavy snow the Sierra, southern Cascades and Rockies, travel could become impacted. The snow will spread across the Dakotas later in the day.

Across southern and central California, the WeatherRadar shows a few lingering showers streaking across San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

It will be a bit overcast across the lower Mississippi Valley and the Southeast. A few late-day showers will develop across the Mid-South too.

Just like on Thursday, a big spread in temperatures will be found across the U.S. Texas and the Southeast will be in the 70s and low 80s, while single digits will be found in Dakotas. The TemperatureRadar also shows 20s and 30s across the Northeast, Great Lakes and the central Plains. Everywhere else will be in the 30s and 40s.

Super Typhoon Bavi threatens Taiwan. 155 mph winds. . Weather Videos. Wednesday, July 8, 2026
The image shows an intense tropical cyclone over the western Pacific, east of Taiwan and the Philippines. The centre of the system is depicted as a light purple and white vortex with a clearly visible eye, surrounded by a ring of red and orange areas indicating the strongest wind speeds. A white arrow marks the typhoon’s predicted track towards the north-west, in the direction of Taiwan. To the west of the storm lie the Philippines, with the cities of Manila and Cebu; to the north of these lies Taiwan, with Taipei. Further west, the Chinese coast, including Hong Kong, and parts of Vietnam can be seen. The coloured wind map shows predominantly green areas outside the storm’s core, indicating significantly weaker winds. White streamlines illustrate the typhoon’s anti-clockwise circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. The highest wind speeds are concentrated around the eye of the cyclone.
