Breakfast Brief
Flood risks in the South, PNW

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are heading for the southern Plains and ArkLaTex this day after Christmas while the West deals with its umpteenth storm for the week. In the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, snow, rain and ice will make travel difficult. The Southeast and Florida will see more umbrella weather. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Many are traveling back home after their Christmas holiday today and that means many will have to deal with the wet, snowy and even icy weather impacting the U.S. today.

The larger weather makers are in the southern Plains and ArkLaTex as well as in the West today. For those in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana, heavy rainfall could cause some isolated flooding issues. Not to be outdone, scattered thunderstorms with gusty winds are in the forecast. Some severe storms are possible.

This day in weather history

In 1989, wind chills got down into the minus-40 range across New York State due to an Arctic blast. Mind the temperatures in your area on the TemperatureRadar.

In the Pacific Northwest, residents will be dealing with tricky travel as another storm makes its way inland today. Heavy rain and mountain snow will keep the umbrellas and tire chains busy. For those heading over the mountain passes, mind the notices posted for the possibly treacherous conditions.

The East is also busy today. The morning starts with a few isolated pockets rain, ice and snow across the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic. Have your alerts switched on and keep your winter emergency kit stocked if you are traveling.

To the Southeast and Florida, scattered rainfall will be present. The WeatherRadar shows a mix of clouds and rain moving from west to east in the Southeast while spotty showers are present all day across Florida.
