A geomagnetic storm hit Earth’s atmosphere early Friday morning, sparking auroras over Alaska and Canada. The bright northern lights could be seen from Earth and space!

Beautiful streams of green auroras were seen from around Juneau, Alaska, early Friday morning as a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit the Earth’s magnetic field.

Many of the webcams in the area caught the beautiful northern lights.

Not only were the cameras catching the lights from the ground, but NOAA satellites from the Joint Polar Satellite Systems program caught the auroras from space.

Due to the sun's lower angle in the sky, the northern hemisphere has a better chance of seeing the aurora borealis during the darker winter months. But for those even further north, near the Arctic Circle, you can see the auroras if you’re up late enough on a clear night any time of year!
