More Florida heat records

A major record-breaking heat wave continues across Florida this week. Temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, with a few interior spots touching 100 degrees.

On Sunday, Tampa temperature hit 100 degrees on Sunday. This was the first time the city recorded a triple-digit temperature since records began in 1890. Today's daily high temperature record of 97 could be broken.

Driving the extreme heat is a layer of Sahara dust high in the atmosphere. This is suppressing cloud cover and the typical summer thunderstorms that bring slight cool-downs every afternoon across the Florida peninsula.

The WeatherRadar shows a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms across extreme south Florida today and through midweek. For the rest of the state, hot weather will continue in Tampa, Orlando, Gainesville and Jacksonville.
