Daily briefing

Multiple storm systems are bringing everything but the kitchen sink today. Many have gusty winds, heavy/flooding rains and even mountain snow on their local forecasts. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

A Nor'easter that has been impacting much of the East Coast since the weekend will finally pull out today, but not without bringing rain and gusty winds at its big exit. Rain will move out throughout the day first in the Mid-Atlantic this morning, then in New England and the Northeast by the afternoon.

The WindRadar shows the strongest winds along the coast throughout today, as high as 45 mph, from Virginia Beach to Boston. However, gusts into the 30 to 40 mph range could be felt further inland, east of the Appalachians.

A disturbance will bring rain and storms across the northern, central and High Plains today in addition to the northern and central Rockies and Front Range. Mountain snow and high elevation ice could also slow things down in the morning in Idaho and western Montana. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar throughout the day.

Finally, to the West, the same storm that has been bringing rain and mountain snow along the coastal states is still impacting residents today in California and the Great Basin. The Sierras are under winter storm warnings with as much as 1 to 3 feet possible along the Sierra Crest. Additionally, up to 3 inches of rain have prompted flood watches in southern California. Isolated severe storms are also possible.

Highs will be warmest in the Southwest and belly of the U.S. from the Front Range to the Southeast and Florida with upper 70s and 80s. The Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will be slightly cooler in the 60s and 70s. The northern Plains and Upper Midwest will be chilly in the 40s and 50s with slightly warmer upper 50s and 60s spreading throughout the rest of the West, except for the cold mountains in the 20s and 30s. Tropical Storm Lorenzo is churning way out in the central Atlantic with no threat to land at this time. It will be turning northward today, with a possibility of reaching the Azores this weekend.
