Big severe trouble
Dangerous storms for Plains, Midwest

Dangerous severe storms are likely this afternoon and evening from the western high Plains to the Midwest. Destructive winds and tornadoes are possible.

Rapid City and Sioux Falls, S.D., Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn., Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisc., and the Chicago northern suburbs could all be in line for these storms through tonight. Widespread power outages, down trees and roof damage will be possible from destructive winds exceeding 60 mph and strong tornadoes.

This late-summer bout of severe storms is due to a cold front clashing with an extremely hot airmass found across the Mississippi Valley. Strong upper-level winds will push the storms along, with storms rushing and lowering the time to prepare for their arrival.

It will be important to have alerts activated to be ready to act and seek shelter if a storm is approaching. Track the storms using our WeatherRadar all day.
