We've made a switch
Dew point feature now available!

Outdoor running

Dew points are now in our app! After replacing the humidity feature, the dew point can be used to plan outdoor activities and gardening among other helpful items.

Have you checked? The most recent update on our app shows the dew point in place of the humidity! This can be particularly useful as you go about and plan your day.

The dew point, according to the American Meteorological Society, is the temperature in which the surrounding air temperature needs to be cooled to reach 100 percent relative humidity. It is the value that tells us how much moisture is in the atmosphere.

The closer the dew point is to the ambient air temperature, the more moisture there is in the atmosphere. Warmer air holds much more moisture than cooler air, but this can feel quite different depending on where you live and the time of year!

For example, in the early summertime, a dew point in the low 60s in Florida could feel much more comfortable since the state is surrounded by plenty of water. But comparatively in Tennessee, a landlocked state, dew points in the 60s could feel very muggy since residents are more used to drier air.

Have you noticed that high humidity in the wintertime does not feel as sticky as it does in the summer? We typically begin to get that sticky feeling once dew points reach above 65 F. Since it is much too cold in the winter to reach this dew point, higher humidity levels (for most parts of the country) are pretty comfortable.

Knowing the dew point can also help with gardening! Moisture can vary depending on the soil type in your garden and how much mulch you have over your plants but knowing the dew point can help you protect them.

The dew point can determine whether frost will form on your plants. Frost is less likely to form on your plants if the air is more humid, meaning the dew point is high and close to the air temperature. However, if you have mulch surrounding your plants, frost is more likely to form since mulch prevents moisture from escaping the soil, keeping the air around it drier and more susceptible to frost formation.

It is important to note that dew points can never be higher than the air temperature. It can only be equal to (100 percent humidity) or less than the air temperature (<100 percent humidity).

If your app is not set to automatically update on your device, be sure to check for the most recent update. You can easily find the dew point in your area when you open the homepage of the app. Do you not have our free app yet, download today to begin tracking the weather, like the dew point, in your area!
