Geminid meteor shower peaks tonight

The year's most vibrant meteor shower, the Geminids, peaks tonight. While the Geminids are one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year, a nearly full moon may cause some viewing issues.

The annual Geminids are one of the most spectacular meteor showers, and they peak tonight into early Saturday morning. Under favorable viewing conditions, there can be up to 150 shooting stars per hour. Unfortunately, a nearly full moon will make it more challenging to see these meteors streak across the sky. Check out moonrise in your area with our astro function.

While the Geminids radiate from the constellation Gemini, they occur as the Earth passes through the debris field of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. Its orbit brings it closer to the sun than any other named asteroid.

For the best view, you will want to be in a dark location away from city lights. Don't forget to check the forecast on the WeatherRadar. The meteors are best viewed lying down with your feet pointed south. Also, pack your patience and some warm clothes and blanket. It will take around 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark enough to easily spot the meteors.
