Meteorological winter is around the corner

Landscape comparison between the different seasons

It's hard to believe, but winter is just around the corner!

Meteorological Winter kicks off on December 1, marking the start of what many consider the "official" winter season. Unlike Astronomical Winter, which begins with the winter solstice around December 21, Meteorological Winter is based on the calendar, aligning perfectly with December, January and February.

So why the difference? Meteorological seasons are based on temperature cycles and follow set three-month blocks, making it easier for climatologists to compare weather data from year to year. This fixed start allows us to track winter’s trends consistently each year, even before the solstice.

With just a few weeks left, it’s almost time for frosty mornings, snowflakes, and hot cocoa. So grab your scarf and mittens and get ready—winter is almost here!
