Heavy rain and storms for the South Monday, severe weather is possible

Severe weather possible
Heavy rain and storms for the South

A powerful storm will move across the Mid-South today and into the Ohio Valley tonight. On the cold side of the system, winter weather is in play. On the warm side of this storm, severe weather is possible for the South.

Low pressure is moving across the Lower Mississippi Valley this morning, and an associated cold front is crossing the Deep South along with it. The WeatherRadar shows showers and storms along and ahead of the low pressure and the cold front where warm and humid air is streaming into the Southeast.

Powerful low pressure

Severe weather will be possible within this zone of warm and humid air in the Southeast. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a slight risk, a level two out of five, of severe storms from the Florida Panhandle into South Carolina. A marginal risk, a level one out of five, stretches from Alabama into North Carolina. Cities such as Mobile, Ala., Tallahassee, Fla., Atlanta, Columbus and Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C. may see damaging winds and small hail. A tornado or two also cannot be ruled out.

In addition to the threat of severe thunderstorms, heavy rain will lead to possible flash flooding. Rain totals between 1 and 4 inches will be common across the Southeast today, making flash flooding a concern. If you live in a flood-prone area, be cautious and pay attention. Also, remember to turn around, don't drown, when you come across a water-covered road.

Sunshine and cooler temperatures will return to the South tomorrow, but this low pressure system will bring wintry weather to parts of the Northeast. Now is a good time to make sure your Weather & Radar app alerts are turned on.
