Lala intensified and passed south of the southernmost point of the United States. The hurricane is still set to bring dangerous conditions to the entire island chain.

The greatest threat from Lala will be life-threatening flooding. Periods of torrential rain will continue across the Big Island. Rainfall in the first 12 hours of Saturday already reached 12 to 13 inches across windward Maui and the Big Island, and as shown on the WeatherRadar, the rain will continue through Sunday morning.

Lala will continue to downgrade and pass south of the rest of the Hawaiian islands.
Lala will continue to downgrade and pass south of the rest of the Hawaiian islands.

The WindRadar is also showing strong winds impacting the islands, with strong onshore winds enhancing rainfall along the east-facing slopes of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. The combination could produce especially dangerous flooding in windward areas. Keep in mind that winds are forecast to gradually decrease as the system enters slightly cooler waters and dry air infiltrates the system.

Hurricane alerts are in effect for the entire island chain, as well as across the surrounding marine areas.
