Icy mix to interrupt evening commute

Ice and snow will be moving into more of the Northeast soon creating a hazardous evening commute.
Ice and snow will be moving into more of the Northeast soon creating a hazardous evening commute.

We’ve had our eyes on a soaker of a storm system bringing everything from flooding rains to ice across the South and Midwest since Sunday evening. The northern side of the system continues to bring a wintry mix and snow to the Northeast.

Winter weather advisories are still in place across the Northeast as the northern flank of the storm system rides on top of a large high pressure. Tapping into colder air, a wintry mix and snow are the main hazards through late Wednesday night before the temperatures warm and everything turns to rain.

Places like far northeast Pennsylvania, eastern New York, including Albany to Utica and north to Plattsburgh, all of Vermont and New Hampshire, most of Maine south of Clayton Lake and Houlton, and down to Worcester, Mass., are all in the winter weather advisory through late Wednesday and early Thursday morning.

We already have rain, snow, and a wintry mix, including ice moving across the Northeast, as seen on the WeatherRadar. This will become more widespread throughout the afternoon, with the icy mix moving into eastern New York’s higher elevations as well as Vermont and New Hampshire during the evening commute.

As the ice moves in, up to a tenth of an inch of ice, with more possible locally, will accumulate on outdoor surfaces. One to three inches of snow are possible as well.

While slippery road and sidewalk conditions are already expected with the snow and ice, remember to be on the lookout for ice weighing down tree limbs and branches as well as powerlines. Power outages are possible as the ice accumulates.

Due to southwesterly flow, temperatures will warm from west to east, and by Thursday, many who dealt with the wintry weather today will notice it quickly melting due to afternoon highs in the upper 30s and 40s. New England could make it to the low to mid-50s, too.

The “warmer” weather doesn’t stop there. We could see a tied high-temperature record on Friday in Atlantic City, N.J., with a forecast of 58 F! Temperatures in the Northeast will be up to 15 degrees warmer than average for this time of year to close out the week. Enjoy it while it lasts!
