King tides cause flooding, erosion along the the West Coast

Beach erosion, flooding
King tides affecting the West Coast

king tides and coastal flooding

Aside from the next storm system inching closer to the west coast, specifically near the Pacific Northwest region, the King Tides are also bringing higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides.

What are King Tides?

These are the highest astronomical tides of the year, they are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. Higher than normal high tides cause great impacts to coastal communities, causing flooding, beach erosion, and often damage cars and property as the saltwater overflows streets, parks, etc.

Sea level rise has caused these tides, which happen a few times a year, to become more damaging and cause more headaches to residents and visitors in coastal communities across the United States and the world.

Impacts to the West coast in January 2022.

The strong winds are causing very high waves, creating dangerous coastal conditions that can cause flooding and beach erosion. Now, with the higher than usual high tides, minor flooding is occurring along some coastal spots from Southern California through the Pacific Northwest.

The King Tides have been present since December 30 and will last until January 7. After January 4, they will peak and will slowly subside.

There is a gale warning in effect extending from the northern California coast to the Washington coast as seas could reach up to 22 feet.

Coastal flood advisories will continue to be in effect at least through this afternoon across parts of northwest Washington, including for the Seattle area as high tides could reach one to two feet above ground level, which could flood lots, parks, and lead to some road closures.

Coastal flood advisories are also in effect for the San Francisco Bay in the San Pablo Bay as the King Tides will also bring minor flooding to low-lying areas. Road closures are expected across some locations as the saltwater penetrates into coastal roads well above the sea walls.

Across the Southern California coast, abnormally high tides between 7 and 7.5 feet will also cause minor tidal overflow, which could cause beach erosion and allow seawater to pool. High tides occur between 9 and 11 a.m.and around 9 and 11 in the evening. Make sure to be aware of your local high tide times, especially if you are traveling or plan to go to the beach during the next few days.
