Who sees the most?
Lake effect snow begins today

Northwest flow on the back of a cold front will lead to the formation of lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes. Light to moderate snowfall may cause some travel concerns today into Wednesday.

Lake effect snow is common this time of year, and a quick burst of flurries is expected downwind of the Great Lakes Tuesday and Wednesday as a cold front moves through. As winds shift out of the northwest and cold air blows over the comparatively warmer Great Lakes, a few inches may accumulate.

The WeatherRadar is showing snow this morning over Michigan's upper peninsula, including over the city of Marquette, and over northern Michigan, including in the city of Alpena. The eastern part of the upper peninsula will be the big winner in terms of snowfall, with Newberry, Mich., picking up 4-7 inches of snow, and Sault Ste. Marie seeing 7-9 inches through Wednesday morning.

Tuesday evening will bring a wintry mix downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario Tuesday evening that will then switch over to all snow by the overnight hours. Areas downhill of Lake Ontario will see the most snowfall through Wednesday and into Thursday morning, with the Tug Hill Plateau picking up 3-6 inches. Travel in cities like Watertown, N.Y., may be impacted by this snowfall.

Wind gusts New York

In addition to snow, wind may be an issue in western New York today, especially around the Buffalo metro. Wind advisories are in effect for gusts up to 50 mph until 6 p.m. ET this evening. Keep an eye on the WindRadar and secure your Christmas decorations.
