Late-week severe threat
Now is the time to be ready!

Things are starting quiet for the beginning of the week, but the latter half has thunder-wielding weather for the Plains, a severe threat on our radar since late last week.

A feisty weather pattern will move into the Plains this week starting Thursday. Low pressure shifting east off the Rockies and carrying cold air behind it will run into a toasty air mass sitting in the Plains with temperatures at least 10 to 15 degrees above average.

This clash of air masses, along with the moisture being swept northward from the Gulf, will ignite scattered severe storms in the central and southern Plains Thursday.

The exact zone of severe storms can shift in the forecast before Thursday, but at this time, places like Lubbock and Wichita Falls, Texas, Fort Sill and Woodward, Okla., Liberal and Garden City, Kan., as well as just south of Interstate 80 in south-central Nebraska are at risk.

On Friday, the severe threat shifts just slightly to the east but could cover a much larger swath. Residents from Dallas and Waco, Texas, to northern Idaho need to have their eyes to the sky for severe storms.

By Saturday, another low pressure will slide off the central Rockies, renewing a severe weather threat in the central and southern Plains. Those from southern Kansas to northern Texas will have to keep a close eye on the Weather & Radar forecast. More details to come about Sunday's threats too.

Our team of meteorologists will be on top of this situation, bringing daily updates and coverage by later this week. Remember to have at least three ways to receive a weather warning.
