This weekend
Major winter storm to target South

A major winter storm is gearing up to blast across the South, bringing wintry weather from Texas to the Carolinas. Details are still being worked out, but expect big travel headaches and power outages.

A powerful winter storm is just starting to come into view on the WeatherRadar. A swath of snow, sleet and freezing rain will impact much of the Southeast, bringing treacherous travel conditions and power outages.

The wintry weather will start up across the southern Rockies and Plains on Friday and then shift across the Mid-South and toward the East Coast over the weekend.

Cities like Dallas, Shreveport, La., Starkville, Miss., Atlanta, Columbia, S.C., and Charlotte, N.C., will need to be on alert for crippling ice through the weekend. Heavy snow is a concern in cities like Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Lexington, Ky., and Nashville, Tenn.
