Weekend severe threat in South & East

It's been a stormy stretch in the South since the Christmas holiday and more severe weather is on tap for December's last weekend.

A strong low-pressure system pushing plentiful Gulf of Mexico moisture into the South today is posing a severe storm threat, with the chance for multiple tornadoes. Residents from Texas to Georgia will have to mind the sky as a line of severe storms could become dangerous today starting in the late-morning hours Saturday through early Sunday morning.

Did you know?

Nocturnal tornadoes are twice as deadly as daytime tornadoes due to people being asleep and not hearing tornado warning sirens and due to the darkness covering tornadoes from spotters.

Gusty winds, large hail and EF-2 tornadoes are possible as the storms sweep the lower Mississippi Valley, especially overnight, posing a nocturnal threat on top of the already potent system. A tornado outbreak is possible, especially across central Louisiana and Mississippi. Having tornadoes spawn is one thing, but add nightfall to this and it could become an even more dangerous situation.

By Sunday, the storm system shifts to the East where another round of severe weather is in the forecast, particularly from Georgia to southern Virginia. Isolated severe storms could stretch from northern Florida to the tri-state area of West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Heavy downpours will accompany the storms. Have your alerts switched on and keep a close eye out for flash flooding, especially since this storm will move across areas being impacted by drought.
