Florida flood threat
Much-needed rain continues for the South

It's been a soggy start to the week for much of the South, especially along the Gulf Coast. More beneficial rain is in the forecast, but flooding concerns are growing for South Florida.

We are tracking a storm system in the Western Gulf that's expected to move gradually east, bringing cooler temperatures and rain to portions of the Gulf Coast throughout Tuesday. By Wednesday, this system moves into the eastern Gulf. A frontal system will be dragged along with it and will be draped over southern Florida.

Rain amounts

The heaviest rain Tuesday will fall along the immediate Gulf Coast. New Orleans, which has been plagued by drought, will pick up another inch of much-needed rain. Through the end of the week, more rain is in store for the northern Gulf Coast, with an additional 2-3 inches falling in Mobile, Ala., and Tallahassee, Fla.

As this system pushes into the eastern Gulf, heavy rain is expected to set up in Southern Florida. While cities like Tampa and Orlando, Fla., will see 2-3 inches of rain through the end of the week, heavier downpours are expected in South Florida. Miami and Fort Lauderdale will see 3-5 inches of rain.

A marginal risk, a level one out of four of excessive rain, is in place for southeast Florida Tuesday. Wednesday brings a slight risk of excessive rainfall, a level two out of five, to the same region. By Thursday, a marginal risk of excessive rainfall extends from West Palm Beach to Jacksonville, Fla. Urban flash flooding in particular is a concern.
