Officer rescues dog in hot car

A dog was left inside a hot car in North Florida on Sunday as temperatures were well above average and even hotter inside the car.

According to the St. Johns County Sherriff's Office, officers broke the car's window to rescue the puppy, who had been inside the hot car for at least 30 minutes. Highs on Sunday were close to the mid-80s, and the humidity made the temperatures feel much hotter.

Cars can quickly heat up to dangerous temperatures even if it's in the 70s outdoors. Tap on the picture for more safety tips.

Unfortunately, these instances will continue to surface more and more as we move closer and through the hotter months of the year. Throughout the year many times pets and kids are left behind in hot cars, either by accident, like forgotten kids in the back of a car or bus, or when the kids get inside an unattended vehicle or when kids are knowingly left behind in a car.

Hot cars & kids stats:

Since 1998, almost 1000 kids have died from heatstroke in vehicles, and on average there are 37 deaths annually in the U.S.
