Parts of Texas: High flood thread, severe storms to start the week

Parts of Texas at risk
High flood threat, severe storms

A coastal low-pressure system hugging the Texas coast will increase the chance for severe storms on Monday. There are high levels of moisture moving through the area which can increase the flooding threat over areas west and south of Houston.

Although the system will be losing its punch by mid-week, the storm will be slow to move up the coast today and tomorrow. Its slow movement is expected to increase the flooding risk across parts of southeast Texas through Austin.

Slow moving low -pressure brings the risk of severe storms and flooding from Austin to areas just west of Houston.

The showers will be slow to taper off on Tuesday morning. Much of this area will wake up under dense fog which will likely be in effect through mid-morning on Tuesday.

Flooding is possible from Fort Bend County, just west of the city of Houston to Austin to Refugio located northeast of Corpus Christi. Heavier downpours will affect the area under a flood watch, and it is likely that some of these areas will be upgraded to flood warnings as the flood water rises.

Rain totals will be around 2 inches along the coast, but higher amounts are expected about 30 miles inland where 2 to 4 inches of rain are possible.

Some storms could drop isolated higher amounts, so please make sure to avoid any flooded roads. Floodwaters can be deeper than expected, even in areas you frequently cross.

Severe storms could also develop across the area. Frequent lightning will be likely as the storms move through, strong, gusty, and damaging winds are possible through the early evening.

Make sure to stay informed in case a severe storm warning is issued for your location. Limit your time on the roads, especially if you are near I-10 from Houston westward to San Antonio, northward to Austin.
