Plains to East Coast
Second storm brings up the rear

Just as this first storm of the week is exiting another storm will have already picked up speed across the central Plains dropping heavy snow, freezing rain and heavy rain.

Remember the polar jet stream positioning mentioned earlier with the first storm? If not, go here first! It will finally shift on Wednesday and this next low-pressure system will follow its new path zipping from the Front Range to the East Coast in 48 hours. More snow, rain and ice are in the forecast with an added bonus - severe weather.

Winter storm watches are posted for those in far eastern Colorado through Buffington, Iowa already. The highest snow totals are expected to be between 4 and 6 inches for the central Plains through northern Missouri. It is still too early to know ice accumulation but even a glaze with heavy snow can cause power outages. Have a snow emergency kit ready to go.

By Wednesday evening the storm will become more organized, dropping snow across the Midwest and Great Lakes, with rain, snow and ice mixing in across the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and lower Northeast. What you get all depends on the temperature.

On the southern flank of this second storm system, severe weather is possible. As of Monday afternoon, the Deep South has a marginal risk for isolated severe thunderstorms as the storm's associated cold front sweeps the south on Wednesday. Keep a close eye on the WeatherRadar as the system draws near and have at least 3 ways to receive a weather warning.
