Rain and some snow
Soggy Friday for the East Coast

It's a soggy start to the end of the workweek along the I-95 corridor. A cold front is pushing east and will exit the East Coast by Friday evening. However, some rain and snow chances will linger for some into the weekend as a second system moves through.

The WeatherRadar shows a low pressure system moving across the Northeast with a cold front flanking it. This system is sparking off showers and storms Friday morning along the East Coast, stretching from northern Florida to Massachusetts. Since there isn't a lot of cold air to work with, snow showers are confined to New England.

Friday's severe risk

For much of the East Coast, the showers and storms will be an inconvenience, but there is the threat of a few strong storms in the Carolinas. A marginal risk of severe storms, a level one out of five, is in place for parts of South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina. Cities such as Columbia and Charleston, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C. could see locally gusty winds and small hail this afternoon and into the early evening.

While snow is falling on the cold side of this system in Northern New England, snow totals are not expected to be impressive. Between 1 and 3 inches will accumulate across the Hudson Valley and into Maine, with the highest totals expected in northern Maine.

Drier weather will move in for much of the East Coast overnight as the front moves offshore into the Atlantic. However, a quick-moving low will bring snow to the southern and central Appalachians Saturday night, with light rain spreading across the Mid-Atlantic Saturday into Sunday.

Weather & Radar's expert meteorologists are also keeping an eye on a storm system that's set to bring severe weather to the eastern half by the middle of next week.
