Spring snowstorm impacts Plains, Midwest

A powerful spring snowstorm is currently blasting portions of the Plains and upper Midwest with heavy snow and high wind gusts.

The WeatherRadar shows heavy snow stretching from the Texas Panhandle into Minnesota Monday morning as a powerful low pressure system brings a wintery mess to a large swath of the country. Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are in place into Tuesday, with blizzard warnings for the central and northern Plains from Kansas to South Dakota and the Arrowhead of Minnesota.

With heavy snow and gusty winds impacting a large region, many cities such as North Platte, Neb., Sioux Falls, S.D., Minneapolis, and Duluth, Minn., will experience difficult travel and possible power outages due to the wintry weather. Snow totals will continue to climb through Tuesday, with cities like Minneapolis already seeing more than 8 inches since Sunday.

Additional snowfall totals will vary, but 6-12 inches are forecast from central Nebraska to northeastern Minnesota. With the WindRadar showing gusts up to 50 mph in this region into Tuesday morning, you can expect near-zero visibility at times. Travel may be seriously impacted in portions of central and northeastern Colorado into northwestern Kansas, central Nebraska and south-central South Dakota.

This wintry pattern will begin to taper off on Tuesday as our low pressure system pushes north into Canada. By Wednesday, much quieter conditions will prevail. In the meantime, check conditions on the WeatherRadar before heading out.
