Storms return to South Florida, flooding possible

Guess what’s back?
Storms return to South Florida

Hey, South Florida! Remember those drops that often fall from the sky, especially during the summer months across our area that contain water? (It’s been such a dry stretch that you may have forgotten)? Well, they will likely be back Thursday, and there might be some flooding too.

After a nice morning across South Florida, the clouds will gradually build over the region, and numerous showers and thunderstorms will be possible through the afternoon into the evening as instability returns – courtesy of a weakening frontal boundary that will be arriving from the north.

The main issue with the showers and thunderstorms will be their slow movement. The showers will linger for a longer period, especially over the metro areas, from Miami through Fort Lauderdale.

Expect the showers and thunderstorms to start around 1 p.m. across Palm Beach and Broward Counties and slowly progress, (and some to expand in coverage too) over Miami Dade county.

Precipitation will be slow to end as the frontal boundary will become stationary and continue to bring the chance for downpours and storms across South Florida on Friday. Please make sure to keep in mind that with the day’s heating there will be another chance for thunderstorms on Friday afternoon. If you have plans outdoors, we would recommend bringing them indoors, especially if they are during the late afternoon into the evening on Friday.

By Friday evening, some coastal areas could receive between 3 and 5 inches of rain, which may lead to flooding. As the showers will be slow to move, the drainage will take its time too.

How about for the weekend?

Overall, soggy conditions will persist through the weekend, with the highest chance for storms to happen after 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday as the movement of the storms will shift. Most of the moisture over the weekend will arrive from the east-southeast, so downpours will be affecting coastal and some inland locations too.

Will it help the drought?

Every little bit counts! The drought has been worsening across South Florida in the last few weeks. Although the severe drought levels are affecting Southwest Florida, these rains will definitely put a dent in the abnormal to moderate drought spots from Miami-Dade through the Lake Okeechobee area.
