Stormy northern Plains, hot Central U.S.

Low pressure moves to the Great Lakes, with showers and storms forecast from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic. More record heat will impact Texas today. The Breakfast Brief is published Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

The WeatherRadar shows an active pattern across much of the country. Unsettled weather, with rain and mountain snow, will continue in the northern Rockies. Low pressure has moved into the lower Great Lakes, and showers and storms will extend from Michigan to the Carolinas.

Isolated strong storms are possible from Raleigh, N.C., to Washington, D.C., today, with gusty winds being the main threat. A severe storm threat will build across the northern Plains this afternoon and evening, with cities like Bismarck, N.D., Sioux Falls, S.D., and Norfolk, Neb., at risk for damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

The heat wave in the southern Plains continues today, with triple-digit heat across central Texas. Once again, record highs will be at risk in Texas cities such as Dallas, San Antonio, Austin and Houston.

You'll also want to keep an eye on the WindRadar today. Gusts in excess of 40 mph will keep fire danger elevated in cities like El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M.
