Low-end risk lingers
Strong storms rumble across Plains

Severe weather has been relentless across the heartland over the last week. Today, more severe storms are possible across the Plains and Midwest, with a low-end risk lingering into the weekend.

It's been a wild week for the Plains after a tornado outbreak last weekend, followed by more severe weather and flash flooding this week. While the data is still being finalized, this past weekend's outbreak brought an EF-4 tornado to Marietta, Okla., making it the first EF-4 tornado in Oklahoma since 2016.

Tuesday and Wednesday brought even more severe weather to the Plains. While today's risk covers a smaller area, more than 2.5 million people are still threatened by strong storms. A slight risk, a level 2 out of 5 of severe weather, extends across north-central Texas and includes the cities of Abilene, Wichita Falls, and Fort Worth. Damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and large hail are the main threats.

Thursday severe risk

The WeatherRadar shows storms developing over the southern and central Plains this afternoon and continuing into the evening and overnight hours. These storms will also bring rain to portions of central and eastern Texas, which experienced heavy rain this morning as a complex moved through. The flash flooding threat will continue for this region, read more about it here.

A low-end severe weather threat will dart across the southern and central Plains through the remainder of the week, but conditions will be much quieter into the weekend. However, we are tracking another risk of severe storms early next week. The Plains are already highlighted under a slight risk on Monday.
