Storms turn deadly
Concert stage blown apart in Argentina

violent storm Argentina

A violent and rare storm struck Argentina's capital, causing massive destruction and claiming 18 lives.

This rare storm brought fierce winds exceeding 93 mph (150 km/h), along with hail and torrential rains.

Did you know?

A similar storm swept through the Northeastern and Eastern states on August 7, 2023, marking a day of prolific severe weather. This storm system lead to more than a thousand reports of high winds, severe hail, and tornadoes combined, stretching from Georgia to New York. The extensive damage impacted homes, vehicles, businesses, and agriculture, as well as other key infrastructure.

In Bahia Blanca, a coastal city about 373 miles (600 kilometers) from the capital, a basketball game turned tragic when the stadium's roof collapsed due to a powerful wind gust, resulting in at least 13 deaths and numerous severe injuries.

The capital itself faced winds up to 75 mph (120 km/h). At Ezeiza International Airport, the intense winds were strong enough to move parked planes. The storm's impact was widespread, with around 400 trees uprooted, significant infrastructural damage, and hundreds of households left without electricity.

The extent of the destruction led to partial isolation of some nearby areas, such as San Isidro, due to blocked roads from fallen trees. The aftermath has disrupted the transportation system, and many regions remain on high alert for further weather disturbances.
