The northern lights may be visible across portions of the country's northern tier tonight.

The aurora could put on a show across up to 15 states as a coronal mass ejection from the Sun is expected to arrive, triggering strong geomagnetic storms.

The northern lights could be seen across much of Washington, Montana, northern Idaho, northeastern Wyoming, North Dakota, and most of South Dakota. In the Midwest, visibility may extend into Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, northern Michigan, and reach as far south as northern Iowa.

Along the East Coast, the chance to see the northern lights extends into northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Most of Alaska may also experience visible auroras.

Should there be a visible aurora, visibility will be a significant issue for many. While parts of Montana and western North Dakota and South Dakota remain clear, cloud cover will be an issue across the Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest, Great Lakes and the Northeast.
