The King Tides are in full effect, specially along the Eastern Seaboard. These astronomical higher-than-normal tides are flooding towns through the weekend and rain might make it worse for some.

The King Tides happen a few times a year, mainly in the spring and fall, when the Moon and Sun are the closest to Earth and aligned. This creates a greater pull in the tides, at times up to 3 feet above their normal leves. If we add the sea level rise that is already happening outside of these astromical tides, coastal flooding becomes a big headache for many.

Luckily for Florida, where the King Tides are often referred to as sunny day flooding, drier air will filter in this weekend, which will limit the flooding to just the high tide times. Places across the New England Coast will not be as lucky.

Not only are the King Tides occurring throughout the weekend, but there are showers in the forecast as a storm moves away from Portland through Boston and the Cape. Additionally, our WindRadar shows the winds coming onshore as this storm moves away, pushing in more water to the coast.

Check your local high tide times and just like in any other flooding event, do not try to drive through floodwater. Also keep in mind that many times these waters are coming out through the sewers, flooding the roads. These waters often have bacteria and toxins, it is best to avoid walking through them.
