Wildfires break out in Carolinas

More than 175 fires raged across the Carolinas over the weekend as dry conditions and gusty winds fueled the flames. Smoke filled a Myrtle Beach, S.C. neighborhood as a nearby fire burned more than 1,200 acres.

Fires erupted across the Southeast, fueled by gusty winds and dry conditions. Many of these fires were located in North and South Carolina. The WindRadar shows some relief today as lighter winds move in, which should help firefighting efforts.

Rain and storms may also bring some relief as a powerful storm system tracks east by mid-week. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and make sure your app alerts are on. Unhealthy air quality due to the recent fires may also linger for a few days. Keep an eye on our air quality tool.

While some relief is on the way for the East Coast, dangerous fire weather is in place across portions of New Mexico, west Texas, southeast Colorado, the Oklahoma Panhandle and southwest Kansas as dry air and very gusty winds take hold.

The WindRadar shows gusts up to 60 mph along with very low relative humidity, prompting a high fire risk for today and Tuesday.
