Will flakes fly in the South? Chilly air and a chance of snow on the way

Chilly air on the way
Will flakes fly in the South?

A powerful winter storm that brought blizzard conditions and ice to the Plains is winding down. However, the remnants of this system remain powerful enough to send chilly air and even snow to the South.

The powerful low pressure that brought a whopper of a winter storm to the Plains will continue to move south and east through the end of the week. While this system is weakening, it will still spread chilly air and send flakes flying in parts of the South.

The WeatherRadar shows moisture wrapping around the low spreading areas of rain and snow across the Great Lakes Thursday morning. Throughout the day, a rain-snow mix will track across parts of southern Wisconsin, Illinois, eastern Iowa, eastern Missouri, and Indiana.

Between 1 and 4 inches of snow are possible near the Mississippi River today, with up to an inch and a half in cities like St. Louis. Lingering light snow showers are also moving across Nebraska and Kansas this morning, but new snow accumulations here would remain below an inch.

Friday afternoon

Snow chances move further south Friday into Saturday. Our WeatherRadar shows snow showers moving into the mid-South over the next 48 hours, bringing snow to parts of Kentucky, Tennessee, and even northern Alabama. Cities like Nashville, Tenn., and Huntsville, Ala., may even see their first snow of the season. A dusting is expected across the Nashville area, but the Cumberland Plateau could pick up an inch.

Even if you don't see snow, chilly conditions will mean it's time to bundle up for the New Year. Cold air will also push into the Southeast just in time for the weekend. The TemperatureRadar shows temperatures 10-20 degrees below average for this time of year. That cold air won't be going anywhere fast and is expected to linger into early 2024.
