Fighting that lacklustre feeling

Sad face drawn in snow on car windowWinter blues can affect any of us as shorter days and longer nights arrive.

Winter can leave some feeling a bit sluggish. Feeling blue this season is normal and nothing unusual as the conditions outdoors change.

Winter blues are a form of the condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. Typical symptoms include declining motivation, fatigue and tiredness, mood swings, negative thoughts, and lack of creativity.

These seasonal low moods are often related to the lack of daylight. The body lacks UV light from the sun which stimulates the happy hormone serotonin. Instead, the body creates more melatonin, the sleep hormone causing fatigue.

Here are five things you can try to reduce the feeling of the winter blues these include:

  • Getting out and about for 30 minutes for some fresh air
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet
  • Get your blood pumping and your mood raised through some exercise
  • Relax your body and mind with some lightly scented candles
  • Invest in a lightbox to try 'light therapy'

Don’t let winter get you down, but if it does try our tips to see if they can help you. Keep on top of the winter weather at all times with the WeatherRadar.
