New York to New England
Wintry storm impacts Northeast

A quick-hitting wintry mess of snow and ice will impact the Northeast today. While this storm is relatively weak, it will produce some travel trouble from New York to New England.

The WeatherRadar shows a wintry mix of snow, ice, and rain that stretches from the upper Midwest into the Northeast Thursday morning. As low pressure moves from the Great Lakes into the Northeast today, this messy weather will cause some travel issues, especially in the interior Northeast.

Thursday morning WeatherRadar

A wintry mix is in store for many today in the Northeast. The valleys and lower elevations in the Northeast will see a mix of rain, freezing rain, and sleet, while snow will continue to fall in central Maine. The main issue will be ice in eastern upstate New York and interior New England.

The WeatherRadar shows snow and sleet changing over to freezing rain or a mix of freezing rain, snow and sleet throughout Thursday. This wintry mix could change over to rain in a few areas later tonight. The precipitation will then taper off and end by early Friday.

The spotty nature of this wintry mix means some areas will be wet while others will become icy throughout the day. A winter weather advisory is in effect for most of eastern New York, Vermont, far western Massachusetts and western New Hampshire. Cities such as Utica, Glens Falls and Plattsburgh, N.Y., as well as Burlington, Vt., Pittsfield, Mass., and Keene, N.H., may experience travel trouble today.

Given the spotty nature of the wintry mix, snow and ice totals are not expected to be impressive. However, it's important to note that any ice can cause major travel issues. Ice amounts could range from a glaze up to one-tenth of an inch in the higher elevations. Slipper roads will be possible through tonight into Friday morning. Any snow or sleet accumulations are expected to be an inch or less.

The good news is that once this system passes a dry and cool weekend is in the forecast this weekend for the Northeast.
