Breakfast Brief: Debby eyes Northeast, active monsoon

Breakfast Brief
Debby eyes Northeast, active monsoon

Debby continues to climb up the northeast U.S., increasing the flash flood risk across several states. Meanwhile, a cold front tracks across the Great Lakes, bringing cooler weather ahead of the weekend.

A noticeable cooldown is in the cards for many areas across the Great Lakes today as a cold air mass spreads east behind a front. Below-average temperatures will be common across the northern and central Plains and Midwest Friday morning, with possible record-cold temperatures from southeast Wyoming to southern Nebraska and northern Minnesota. The cold air mass migrates east into the Northeast this weekend.

Did you know?

On this day in 1878, one of New England's deadliest tornadoes struck Wallingford, Connecticut. This devastating tornado killed 34 people, injured 100 others, and destroyed thirty homes. Starting as a waterspout over a dam on the Quinnipiac River, it moved onshore with a width of 400 to 600 feet, creating a path of destruction two miles long.

The TemperatureRadar shows much warmer temperatures across portions of the eastern U.S. Friday morning compared to the north-central and Great Lakes.

The West and South remain abnormally hot, but afternoon thunderstorms will help tame daily high temperatures in some areas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will mostly frequent parts of the Southwest, Four Corners, and High Plains. Expect this activity to continue through the weekend and into early next week.

Tropical update:

Debby is heading north across the Northeast U.S., spreading heavy showers and thunderstorms from the Mid-Atlantic through New England. As the storm heads north, it will continue to lose intensity, but flash flooding will continue to be a threat. The highest flood threat on Friday remains from northern Virginia through the interior Northeast.

Additionally, a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic is causing scattered showers and thunderstorms. Development of this system is slow, but conditions may improve next week, potentially forming a tropical depression as it moves toward the Lesser Antilles.

The news we're covering today:

  • Debby loses intensity, but flash flooding remains a serious threat
