Daily briefing
Cold fronts trigger rain, storms & snow

A couple of cold fronts will have residents under umbrellas and watching the WeatherRadar for storms. One of them will also trigger high-elevation snow. This, along with our tropical update, is available at 5 a.m. ET in our daily briefing.

A slow-moving cold front is stretching from the Upper Midwest to the southern Plains today. Its corresponding low pressure is triggering more North Dakota rainfall, too. The cold front will run into a warm air mass throughout the day, creating rainfall from Kansas to Minnesota and Wisconsin throughout today. Gusty winds will be a part of the day, too, as the weather-maker moves through.

This same cold front will cause severe storms starting tonight, but especially into the weekend. Are your alerts switched on?

High pressure out ahead of the front, especially in the lower Mississippi Valley, will push plentiful moisture into southern Texas, where Houston rain is expected. Have the umbrellas handy.

Finally, another frontal system will sweep into the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies today, causing rain and mountain snow.

Warm 70s and 80s will spread from Minneapolis to Houston and Miami, with similar warmth being found in California and the Southwest today. Cooler temperatures in the 50s and 60s will be found in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Ohio Valley as well as the Pacific Northwest, northern and central Rockies and the Great Basin.

Tropical Update

Two areas of interest have come to light in the Atlantic. One is the remnants of a storm that just exited the Northeast coast and another is in the Caribbean as a cluster of thunderstorms moves into favorable conditions. We continue to monitor the tropics as the Atlantic Hurricane Season lasts until November 30.
