Active west, snow for the Appalachians

Breakfast brief
Winter storm moves east, active PNW

A powerful winter storm will continue bringing snow and ice to the Mid-Atlantic later today. The Breakfast Brief is published daily Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern time.

The WeatherRadar shows our winter storm bringing snow and ice across the East this morning. Treacherous travel will remain an issue. Use caution on highways I-55, I-65 and I-70, where icing may be present. Thunderstorms will also move across the Southeast along the cold front.

On this day in weather history...

It was a bad day for chickens on this day in 1988. Heavy snow in Arkansas, with totals ranging up to 16 inches at Heber Springs, claimed the lives of 3.5 million chickens, and snow and ice up to three inches thick claimed the lives of another 1.75 million chickens in north central Texas.

Wintry weather will continue causing travel trouble in cities like Louisville, Ken., Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Va., Philadelphia and New York City. The TemperatureRadar shows well below-average temperatures across the central part of the country, with above-average temperatures across the West.

Coastal rain and mountain snow will proliferate across the Pacific Northwest as our active pattern continues. Snow will also spread across the northern and central Rockies and into the northern Plains.

News we're covering today:

  • Winter storm moves east
  • Eyes on the southern Plains this week
