Hawaii tropical trouble
Aloha from T.S. Hone

While the Atlantic hurricane basin remains quiet, two tropical systems —Hone and Gilma— are in Hawaii’s neighborhood in the vast central Pacific.

Tropical Storm Hone is the one that could affect Hawaii this weekend. The tropical storm is about 700 miles southeast of Hawaii’s Big Island and will track to the west just south of the state this weekend.

Even though a direct hit isn’t likely, its outer bands will bring heavy rain to the southern shore of the big island of Hawaii and showers to the rest of the Hawaiian Islands. Two to 4 inches of rain is likely. It will also kick up surf throughout the island chain, producing dangerous rip currents.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Gilma is a major hurricane nearly 1,900 miles away from Hawaii. It will continue to move west and weaken as it moves over colder water of the central Pacific and won’t be a direct threat to Hawaii at this time. It could kick up some more swells next week as its remnants pass to the south.

Rare occurrences

Did you know Hawaii rarely gets hit by tropical systems. Ocean temperatures around Hawaii are usually slightly colder than 80 degrees, the threshold that usually supports tropical cyclones.
