Breakfast Brief
Stormy PNW, snow for the Rockies

Another powerful Pacific storm will slam the West Coast today. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Many are traveling back home after their Christmas holiday today and that means many will have to deal with the wet, snowy and even icy weather impacting the U.S. today.

The larger weather makers are in the southern Plains and ArkLaTex as well as in the West today. For those in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana, heavy rainfall could cause some isolated flooding issues. Not to be outdone, scattered thunderstorms with gusty winds are in the forecast. Some severe storms are possible.

This day in weather history

In 1987, residents of Tucson, Ariz., awoke to a white Christmas for the first time in forty-seven years of records, as a winter storm blanketed the area with up to four inches of snow.

In the Pacific Northwest, another powerful storm pushes in after a lull this morning. Up to 4 inches of rain is possible along the coast, with 6-12 inches of snow in the Sierra. Travel through mountain passes may be especially hazardous, so have the snow chains handy and check conditions before traveling.

Scattered snow showers will build into the Intermountain West, with the higher elevations experiencing a White Christmas.

Scattered showers and storms will continue to move east, stretching from the northern Gulf Coast into the Ohio Valley. The rest of the country will see mild conditions. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar for any changes.
