Big temperature changes West to East

Breakfast Brief
Big temperature changes West to East

An upper-level pattern change will bring a big difference in temperatures from west to east while tropical downpours linger over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic.

Rain and storms will be present across much of the U.S. today. A powerful storm system will bring showers and storms across the Southwest, Great Basin and parts of the northern Rockies today. A few severe storms will be possible across the High Plains. On the East Coast, what's left of a tropical system will continue to bring rain over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic.

This day in weather history

On this day in 1989- Hurricane Hugo hit the Virgin Islands, producing wind gusts to 97 mph at Saint Croix. Hurricane Hugo passed directly over the island of Saint Croix causing complete devastation and essentially cutting off the island from communications.

A big temperature difference will also be in play across the Country today. Highs across the western half of the country will be 10 to 20 degrees below average. Los Angeles will see temperatures in the upper 60s this afternoon, with Las Vegas staying in the 80s. Even Phoenix, which has had incredibly hot temperatures over the last few months, will only make it into the low 90s this afternoon.

Above-average temperatures will build across the central and eastern half of the county, with the exception of areas experiencing tropical downpours today. Temperatures will be in the 90s across the southern Plains, mid-80s across the northern Plains and Midwest and mid-70s in the Northeast.

Tropical update:

Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 has dissipated, but its remnants will bring rain and the risk of flash flooding across the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic. Keep an eye on this system with the WeatherRadar. You can also use our WindRadar to track breezy conditions in this region. Gordon is a tropical depression but will strengthen into a Tropical Storm later this week, staying well away from land.

The news we're covering today:

  • Tropical downpours in the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic
