Breakfast Brief - Severe storms & flooding threat

The severe weather threat shifts mostly to the east on Tuesday but remains in the southern Plains. The worst of the storms are expected in the interior Northeast along the lower Great Lakes. Additionally, training rain and thunderstorms along this frontal system will produce a flooding threat, especially for northern Texas to southern Missouri. The Breakfast Brief is published Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

A strong spring storm system is the stage for more severe weather on Tuesday. Damaging gusts are the main issue to look out for, - at least 57 mph - but hail and tornadoes are also possible, especially for Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, N.Y., Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla., and Abilene, Texas.

At least isolated flooding rains will be possible from West Texas to the lower Great Lakes, but we're eyeing a potentially widespread flooding event for the southern Plains and Missouri Valley. The WeatherRadar shows that rain and storms began moving over this area after Midnight early this morning and will continue throughout the day, dropping up to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts.

We'll see temperatures rise into the 70s and 80s across the South and eastern third, helping fuel the thunderstorms, especially in the Northeast. Wet weather will also focus on the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies today as a cold front makes its way in. By the late-afternoon and evening hours, the front will have rain and mountain snow falling from northern California to the northern High Plains.
