Breakfast brief
Snowy, cold in the north, PNW stays active

The first workday of the New Year will be snowy and cold from the High Plains to the Midwest and to the Northeast. The Pacific Northwest experiences another storm bringing heavy rain and snow. The Breakfast Brief is published daily Monday through Friday at 5:00 a.m., eastern time.

Much like New Year's Day, the WeatherRadar has snow for many across the Midwest, Great Lakes and the interior Northeast in combination with wintry temperatures. The northern Plains will be the coldest again with single digits and 10s, but it won't be much warmer from the Midwest to the Northeast with 20s and 30s.

Southern Texas, including Houston, will need the umbrella but the rest of the South remains quiet. However, those in the Southwest will notice above-average warmth. While nothing record-breaking is in store, many will be happy about the perfect "un-decorating" weather they will have with sun and temperatures in the 60s and 70s.

To the Northwest, a brand new storm system is roaring ashore. Heavy rain and snow are expected with some flash flooding likely in areas prone to flooding as well as in recent burn scars. Have at least three ways to receive weather warnings.
