Breakfast Brief
Travel week kicks off

Thanksgiving week begins today with two large storm systems bringing soggy and even wintry troubles. The Breakfast Brief is published every Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

The biggest storm system will roll across the Midwest and the western Great Lakes. This classic autumn system will bring rain from the Mississippi Valley northward into the Great Lakes. Arctic air diving south across the Plains will change the rain over to wet snow across the Upper Midwest. Chicago, Milwaukee airports could be affected by the weather changes.

The West Coast will see the arrival of a new Pacific system. This will bring a new round of rain to coastal northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Snow will fall in the highest elevations of the Cascades. Seattle, Portland, Ore., and the San Francisco Bay area could be impacted with a few travel headaches.

The rest of the U.S. will not have to deal with any rain or snow on this Monday before Thanksgiving. However, arctic air will settle across the northern and central Plains and Rockies. Afternoon temperatures will be in the 30s and 40s, with even colder teens and 20s found closer to the Canada border and Montana.

The southern Plains and East will be significantly warmer. Southern and central Texas will be in 80s while the Southeast will be in the 70s and the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and eastern Plains will be in the 50s and 60s.

On this day

A major winter storm hit the Northeast on the day in 1950. It killed hundreds of people and New York City recorded a wind gust of 94 mph. Pittsburgh received 30 inches of snow.

Tropical Update

Tropics continue quiet! There is no chance for tropical storm formation within the next 2 to 7 days.

The Atlantic hurricane season ends on Saturday, November 30.
