Breakfast brief
Two winter storm troubles

The active week continues, with not one, but two major storms causing major troubles. The Breakfast Brief is published daily, Monday through Friday, at 5:00 a.m., Eastern time.

The winter storm that roared through the South and Midwest Wednesday will move quickly across the Southeast and the East Coast. This system produced a tornado near Columbia, Miss., overnight. Here is the latest video from scene. Downpours will streak across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, with thunderstorms hitting Carolinas. Snow and ice will hit New England.

West Coast trouble

The West Coast will be the target for a new powerful Pacific storm. The WeatherRadar shows heavy rain rolling ashore, soaking the length of California. Across the Sierras and into the southern Cascades, it will be cold enough for heavy snow to cause major travel headaches. Other hazards from this system will be flash flooding and mudslides in recent burn areas.

The TemperatureRadar will be handy across the northern, northwestern and central U.S. from Texas to the Canadian Border. The map's deep blue, purple and white shades indicate a southbound arctic blast producing sub-freezing temperatures with single digits across the northern and central Plains. A few spots, like Minneapolis, might not climb above zero this afternoon.

Florida and the Southeast will be the nation's warm spots. Highs will be in the 70s, with highs streaking into the 80s across Florida.
