Breakfast Brief
East warm-up, new atmospheric river

A spring-like feel will be around for many in the East while a new storm system makes its way into the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

Temperatures 12 to 15 degrees above normal will blanket the Deep South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and New England on Tuesday - just 48 hours after many received wintry weather in the form of ice or snow. However, due to a stationary front, many will have to deal with showers and even a few thunderstorms in the southern Plains, Deep South and eastern Tennessee Valley.

The northern portion of the front will have heavy rain interrupting the morning commute for I-95 from New York City to Bangor, Maine. Keep a close eye on the WeatherRadar for the specific timing.

Further south, Florida has been dealing with some dry weather issues. Florida's drought has worsened in the last week and now expands to the entire peninsula, with the worst conditions up north. But luckily, a change is starting today.

Showers are expected to intensify across Florida's east coast, specifically in south Florida. Abundant rainfall could cause flooding issues as we expect higher-than-normal precipitation through late Wednesday. Not to be outdone, another front sweeps through on Thursday bringing some more rain and storms to the entire Peninsula. This front will also bring a holiday-appropriate cool down to get you in the seasonal spirit.

For those in the central U.S., snow will be around for the central Rockies to Minnesota. High temperatures in the teens and 20s will spread from the High Plains to the Dakotas and Upper Midwest. Have plenty of cocoa to go around. Hint hint -- an upper-level trough will keep things chilly here this week. Take a look at the TemperatureRadar.

This day in weather history

In 2008, 3.6 inches of snow fell across Las Vegas closing schools, businesses and highways.

California and the Southwest are quiet today with temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to the low 70s but, to the north, a new atmospheric river event got started early this morning. Wintry remnants of Monday's system are making their way across the northern Rockies while the newest storm is bringing heavy rain and Cascades snow across the Pacific Northwest.

Gusty winds will kick up along the coast as well and high wind watches are in place. The winds will continue increasing throughout the day as the associated low pressure moves inland. Gusts up to 65 mph are showing up on the WindRadar.
