Breakfast Brief
Icy East, wet West for Christmas Eve

A storm system is bringing snowy and icy conditions to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic while heavy rain and storms aim for the southern Plains and the middle and lower Mississippi valleys. To the West, a messy weather day is in store as heavy rain causes flooding issues with winter storm conditions in the Cascades and Sierra Nevada. The Breakfast Brief is posted Monday through Friday at 5 a.m. ET.

The system that brought snow to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Monday and Monday night is sliding into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today. Snow is in store for the Northeast while a mix of snow, rain and ice makes its way through West Virginia, Maryland, and northern Virginia. Keep a close eye on the TemperatureRadar to know what kind of precipitation to expect.

On this day in weather history

In 1989, Key West, Fla., recorded a morning low of 44 degrees. Key West often only has lows in the 70s.

In the southern Plains, a soggy and stormy system is bringing the chance for isolated flooding and even severe storms. Gusty winds and hail are the main threats from any severe storms. Be sure to tighten your holiday decorations and mind the WeatherRadar to know when the storms will hit.

Coastal showers will continue impacting the Southeast with isolated thunder rumbles too, but the wet weather is expected to be out to sea by the mid-afternoon.

The West is probably one of the busiest spots this Christmas Eve. A large storm system that began coming ashore in northern California on Monday is continuing its trek inland. Heavy, even flooding rains, as well as mountain snow could have many following Plan B or even C for their holiday travel plans.
