Eureka to Redding - 40-degree difference over 101 miles

Eureka to Redding
40-degree difference over 101 miles

Even with a relatively short distance between them, Eureka and Redding are experiencing two different seasons.

The latest heatwave is impacting the West, including California's Central Valley, but you would never know it along the Golden State's northwest coast.

The TemperatureRadar shows the mercury reaching 104°F in Redding, Calif., on Tuesday, but only 101 miles to the west, Eureka will only flirt with 60°F. Thanks to the influence of the Pacific Ocean and California's topography, a large temperature gradient is present.

The Pacific Ocean's major current runs from north to south along the West Coast, bringing down colder waters and impacting coastal air temperatures like in Eureka. Although Redding isn't too far inland, the mountains in between the two locations keep the cool and heated air separate. Not to be outdone, Redding exists inside the Central Valley, which traps dry, hot air.

The late-season heatwave is impacting the Central Valley, Southern California and the Desert Southwest, breaking and tying daily records. In fact, Los Angeles just had its fourth consecutive day in the triple digits, a new record for October.
