Daily briefing
MLK Day snow & gusty winds

The MLK Day holiday is brisk, with snow and gusty winds for the Midwest through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The West remains under high pressure. The daily briefing is published every weekday at 5 a.m. ET.

Have plenty of layers if you have plans to head out today. Those across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest are waking up to sub-zero temperatures, and they won't warm much either. Scattered snow showers accompany the wintry chill, too.

Gusty winds paint the WindRadar map from Minneapolis to the Appalachian spine and through New England today. The strongest gusts, greater than 40 mph, are expected across the Great Lakes and at the highest elevations.

Cold gusty winds are expected on Monday.WindRadar: Cold gusty winds are expected on Monday.

The rest of the U.S. is quiet to start the new week.

Temperatures will be coldest across the northern tier all the way to the Ohio Valley, with highs below zero through the teens. The Mountain West, the central Plains, the Tennessee Valley and up Interstate 95 from the Carolinas through the Northeast will be in the 20s, 30s and 40s. Milder temperatures in the 50s and 60s will be found along the West Coast, across southern Texas and through Florida. The Desert Southwest is warmest with 70s.
