Deadly "superfog" causes pileups near New Orleans Monday morning

07:00 PM
October 23, 2023

What is it?
"Superfog" develops near New Orleans

Both directions of I-55 northwest of New Orleans were closed Monday morning after dense fog led to multiple accidents.

A combination of smoke from marsh fires and dense fog led to the development of "superfog" Monday morning in southeast Louisiana. Unfortunately, plummeting visibility contributed to numerous multi-car pileups on Interstate I-55.

At least two people were killed this morning and more than 30 people were estimated to be injured. In total, more than 100 vehicles were involved in at least 25 crashes due to visibility that was lower than 10 feet at times.

Conditions through mid-week will remain favorable for the formation of superfog. Check in with the WeatherRadar before heading out and slow down when driving in fog.
