Extreme flooding in New Mexico

Intense flooding along the Rio Ruidoso in New Mexico left at least three dead on Tuesday. A USGS camera caught this rapid flooding. Monsoon rain falling over burn scars from the 2024 South Fork and Salt Fires contributed to the devastating flooding.

The mountain community of Ruidoso, N.M., experienced devastating flooding on Tuesday afternoon after 8 inches of rain fell in just 80 minutes. The WeatherRadar caught this heavy rain in action. Much of the rain fell on burn scars from the 2024 South Fork and Salt Fires.

Burn scars from wildfires increase the risk of flash flooding and debris flows due to changes in the landscape that alter the natural flow of water. The vegetation that normally absorbs rainfall is gone, and the soil can become hard and baked, causing rapid runoff.

The Rio Ruiodos rose 20 feet in just 30 minutes, and a USGS camera caught the rapid rise of water along the river. This flood event comes just days after deadly flooding in the Texas Hill Country killed more than 100 people.

The WeatherRadar shows heavy rain over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic today. Flash flooding is a concern.

More flash flooding is possible today, with the main threat stretching from the Carolinas into the Mid-Atlantic. Keep an eye on the WeatherRadar and be aware of your surroundings. If water is rising, seek higher ground immediately.
